Best Practices and Evaluation Criteria for Constructing Multilingual Structured Vocabularies for LGBTQ+ Libraries and Heritages

Abstract

The findability of non-English LGBTQ+ items in libraries and heritages could be improved with additional multilingual labels. Recent efforts include enriching the Homosaurus Linked Open Vocabulary (available in Dutch and English) with Spanish translation and the newly constructed Swedish thesaurus QLIT. Some recent studies show that such multilingual labels on LGBTQ±related topics widely exist in the semantic web, which could be reused. However, multilingual labels and manual translations are often not thoroughly and systematically assessed, which could be due to the complexity of the lack of comprehensive and systematic evaluation criteria. Moreover, not all of them are properly documented or published. In this presentation, we propose best practices for constructing multilingual structured vocabularies regarding 1) clarity and accuracy, 2) consistency, 3) cultural and contextual sensitivity, 4) inclusivity and ethical considerations, 5) transparency and community contribution, and 6) documenting, publishing, and maintenance. In addition, we provide some indicators and a checklist for self-assessment.
